Implementing the Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines for Language and Early Literacy

Description

These guidelines provide a means to align prekindergarten programs with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum, and are intended to assist educators in making informed decisions about curriculum content and implementing a comprehensive curriculum that prepares children for success in later grades.

The Texas Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines articulate accomplishments for three- and four-year-olds within broad domain areas. They serve as a resource to assist educators in instructional planning and are to be used on a voluntary basis.

Part 1: Language Development; Part 2: Early Literacy

These guides contain detailed trainer notes, presentation slides as color transparencies, reprinted materials, original handouts, handouts with transparency images for participants to take notes, and suggested activities designed to support implementation of the Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines for Language, Early Literacy, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. These activities draw on participants’ knowledge and expertise and offer opportunities for practice.

Instructional Content

The presentation slides are organized into the following sections:

  1. Overview of the Texas Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines for language and early literacy development;
  2. Key concepts in language development and the role of language in early literacy development;
  3. Language diversity and bilingualism;
  4. Effective instructional practices to implement the guidelines; and
  5. Suggested session activities.

The Trainer Notes section provides detailed information and suggested strategies designed to enhance trainers’ presentation of the content. Where appropriate, Trainer Notes identify the materials needed to complete the session activities associated with the transparencies.
