The research of MCPER Executive Director Dr. Sharon Vaughn and Autism Spectrum Disorders Institute Director Dr. Mark O’Reilly is spotlighted in the May/June issue of the Texas Exes magazine, The Alcalde. In the May/June issue, which is dedicated to research at UT Austin that focuses on education in Texas, Vaughn discusses intensive reading interventions for adolescents that were developed at MCPER and used in many research studies. The interventions capitalize on students’ motivation to succeed in reading by providing interesting and intellectually challenging content with which to practice strategies, such as using prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of difficult words. The magazine also features O’Reilly’s research on teaching students with autism spectrum disorders. Selected content from this issue will be available online soon.
