An article by MCPER Executive Director Sharon Vaughn has been featured in a statewide newsletter to parents and teachers in the Iowa special education community. “Intensifying Your Instruction: Responding to the Way a Child Thinks Enhances Performance” appeared in the September 2012 issue of the newsletter Each and Every Child, published by the Iowa Department of Education Bureau of Learner Strategies and Supports (download a PDF of the newsletter). In the article, Vaughn offers tips on intensifying instruction based on the way that individual students think, including making thinking “visible,” determining and correcting the strategies that struggling students use, teaching students to identify “breakdowns” in understanding, prompting student inferencing with text, and providing task-specific feedback.
