Description
This professional development guide is based on the Texas Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines. It addresses topics such as numbers and operations, patterns, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, and classification, with scaffolding methods to assist children in learning math and science.
These guidelines also provide a means to align prekindergarten programs with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum and are intended to assist educators in making informed decisions about curriculum content and implementing a comprehensive curriculum that prepares children for success in later grades.
This guide contains speaker notes, presentation slides as color transparencies, handouts, copies of slides in notes view for participants, reprints, and suggested activities to support implementation of the Texas Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines for Mathematics and Science.
The Speaker Notes section provides detailed information and suggested strategies designed to enhance presentation of the content. Snapshots of the presentation slides are presented alongside the accompanying speaker notes. Information that appears on the slide is bulleted and bolded in the speaker notes. When a slide describes a session activity, the required materials are listed at the bottom of the corresponding speaker note page. This information is also provided in table format in the Introduction section.
The last section includes a set of handouts that correlates the Texas Prekindergarten Curriculum Guidelines for Mathematics and Science with other resources. First, they are aligned with the Kindergarten Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and then, they are correlated to national standards developed by the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics and the National Research Council. The final resource is a glossary of terms used in math and science. References follow the glossary.
